About Goa University

Goa University was founded on 1st June 1985 under the Goa University Act of 1984 (Act no.7 of 1984). The university is situated on the Taleigaoo Plateau, which overlooks the Zuari estuary in Panaji, the capital city of Goa. The college is spread all over Goa with Margao, Mapusa, Ponda, Old Goa and Vasco Da Gama. The main campus in Panaji is spread over approximately 420 acres, offers a scenic and charming panoramic view, and is about 7kms away from the centre of the city Panaji. The campus encapsulates the rich Goan culture and, at the same time, reflects the rich history of the people and culture. The campus is equipped with top-notch facilities. It offers many features for its students, including well-managed faculty blocks, a well-decked library, sports facilities, hostel accommodation, banks and post office for financial needs, and many more. The college was designed under architect Satish Gujral, who is also a painter, sculptor, muralist and graphic designer.

Goa University History

Goa university followed the traditions from the 17th century when the ruling Portuguese people laid the foundation for one of the first university courses. Later, after Goa's annexation, the institute was affiliated with Mumbai University as the Centre for Post Graduate Instruction and Research (CPIR). In 1984, Goa university was founded with the passing of Act no. 7 of 1984, and the CPIR was replaced. The university is a perfect blend of western and traditional influences. The university, like the place, has practised dating back centuries which only adds to the charm of the campus.

Goa University Courses

The university has a wide-ranging scope and offers courses in humanities, technology and sciences. The college provides engineering, commerce, management, science, arts, designing, mass communication and many more. The main campus can be divided into 20 departments and three schools. The college provides both general and professional education and at the same time has approximately 61 colleges affiliated with it. The affiliated colleges and the university offer an undergraduate degree, master degree, M.Phil. and PhD degrees in various fields. 


The university is one of the rare universities that offer courses in Portuguese and French languages. At the same time, the university's Department of Portuguese and Lusophone Studies is the only such in the entire subcontinent of India. The university also offers Visiting Research Professors Programme to bring luminaries in liberal arts and literature, social and natural sciences and other fields. The course is open to the students and the faculty.

Grading

The college is accredited to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in India with an A grade. The university stands at the 96th rank of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and has been in the top 100 since 2016. 2019 Goa university stands in the 241-250 universities in the BRICS countries, and the BRICS countries have approximately 9000 universities. 

Facilities

The university is a well-rounded institute and offers facilities like counselling to its students. The college has well-trained professionals to guide students towards better career paths and, at the same time, look after their emotional well-being. The college has a computer centre, library, day-care centre, guest house, seminar halls, eating facilities, health centre and many more. The college is constantly moving towards providing a safe and progressive environment to its students. It offers financial support to deserving students and needy students.

In association with the Directorate of Archives and Archaeology, Government of Goa, the university organizes an annual seminar to impart knowledge about the rich history of Goa that spans from the ancient to the modern.

The university's invention aims to achieve the necessary and pertinent higher level of knowledge to fulfil the employment needs of the State and at the same time attain global levels of excellence in teaching and research. The university's mission is to convey and distribute knowledge to eager students efficiently and effectively so that the students understand the fundamental, appropriate and socio-economic importance of their subjects and at the same time allows students to achieve gainful employment and achieve competence in their chosen area of study.
